Ha' Penny Bridge- Dublin Ireland
Photo of Ha' Penny Bridge in Dublin Ireland. The Liffey Bridge, official name for the "Ha' Penny Bridge", is a pedestrian bridge built in 1816 to replace 6 ferries that transported people across the River Liffey in Dublin. The boats were in such a state of disrepair as to be dangerous and the operator was forced to cease operations. He offered to help pay for construction of the Liffey Bridge on the condition that, in order to offset the loss of his ferry revenues, for 100 years his company could collect a half-penny toll from every person crossing the bridge.
