Newgrange Entrance Stone- County Meath, Ireland
Photo of Newgrange entrance stone. Newgrange is a passage tomb that is over 5000 years old- older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids! There is no unanimous agreement among experts as to its purpose, although a majority believe it has religious significance. It is part of the Neolithic Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage complex which includes the mounds at Knowth and Dowth. During sunrise on the Winter Solstice the sun shines into the opening above the door and bathes the entire interior with brilliant light. Note the intricate scroll work on the entrance stone.
