My Great Grandfather settled in the area of Pittsburgh where Station Square is now. Back then it was called "Little Limerick". My Grandfather was a Fire Chief in the city of Pittsburgh. My dad was a physician, born on Mt. Washington, and had his office about a mile from the house he grew up in. I grew up, and now live, about four and a half miles from there. I tell audiences in my music shows: "I live 4 miles from where my Great Grandfather settled almost 150 years ago. I don't know if that's a family tradition, or a lack of progress." The point being that Pittsburgh is VERY much a part of what makes me who I am.
Nicknamed "The Steel City", "City of Champions", and "Hell With the Lid Off", Pittsburgh has moved from being a smokey steel making giant to a beautiful, smog free, mecca with a more diverse economic base. Clean air, an abundance of high quality educational institutions and excellent health care facilities, gives the area a quality of life that is hard to match anywhere else.
