Image of Clonmacnoise Castle Ruins, County Offaly Ireland. Clonmacnoise Castle was built in the 13th century. The original wooden structure was destroyed in a Norman attack which the fortress was built to prevent. It was replaced by the stone structure we have today. The castle was sited on a strategic ford of the River Shannon. The structure is far from being in visiting condition...it's as dangerous as it looks!
