Photo of spiral stairs- Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
Founded in 1592 as "The College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin", the purpose of Trinity College was to consolidate England's rule in Ireland and promote Protestant Ascendancy. Around 1793 Catholics and Dissenters were allowed to join but until 1873 fellowships, scholarships, and professorships were only available for Protestants.
From 1871 until 1970 the Catholic Church in Ireland required permission for Catholics to attend Trinity.
